And without my expatiating on this theme, it is obvious that putting little white dots on the blue-black is not enough to paint a starry sky.

Klee’s relationship with the color changed in 1914 during his trip to Tunisia. In his diaries, he stated that he is one with color and that he is a painter. Traveling with Louis Millet and August Macke, Paul painted and drew watercolor landscapes of Kairouan, Hammamet, and Tunis. Born in Paris on April 12, 1885, Robert Delaunay was part of a prominent family descended from French aristocracy; his mother used the title "Countess." His parents divorced when he was four years old, and an aunt and uncle subsequently raised him. An uninspired student, Delaunay did not pursue education and instead apprenticed himself to a theatre designer. Unlike most of the painters of that era, he had no formal art training. In 1910 he married Sonia Terk, a Russian painter who became a life-long collaborator and continued to work on shared ideas long after his death from cancer in 1941.

Mark Rothko was born on September 25, 1903, in Dvinsk, Russia. His birth name was Marcus Rothkowitz. His family left Russia and settled in Portland, Oregon in 1913. From 1921 to 1923 Rothko attended Yale University, New Haven, on a scholarship program. He moved to New York when he left Yale prematurely. He studied under Max Weber at the Art Students League In 1925.
